Innocent Smoothie Recipe Book 4th Estate £12.99 e20 A paragraph on the back cover says it all. ‘Keep on bookshelf or coffee table before opening. Once opened, read at leisure. Contains more than 100% of your RDA of fibre (but the paper’s pretty chewy). May contain bad jokes.’ And so it does. But also good recipes, mainly for smoothies to soothe or kickstart. It’s fun, it’s funky, it’s everything we’ve come to expoect from this quirky (but ethical) company. SL Three Sheets to the Wind by P...

Eating Outdoors by Lindy Wildsmith with photography by Martin Brigdale. Ryland, Peters & Small e25 16.99 The first al fresco cookbook of the year flopped on our desptop to remind us to clean the rungs of the barbecue. There’s nothing amazing here but it’s a useful compendium with some attractive ideas for simple, stylish food. Lindy Wildsmith borrows from many food cultures – tiramisu features as well as grannie’s scones. There are some curious observations like ‘Steak is everybody’s favourite ...

The Perfectionist by Rudolph Chelminski Michael Joseph, hardback GB£17.99 An advance copy proved to be one of my top three reads of the Christmas Holidays (for the record the other two were ‘Waterland’, Graham Swift’s tragic, atmospheric novel and Bob Dylan’s marvellous ‘Chronicles’). Chelminski, veteran foreign correspondent and bestselling author, is a perceptive writer well able to get to grips with the facts and supposition surrounding the well-publicised death of superstar chef Bernard L...

The book begins with a warm introduction to the Fitzmaurice family’s hippy wholefood upbringing. Introductory chapters are full of inspiring culinary ideas and unusual ingredients to dress up dairy and meat-free dishes … ...

Muck and Merlot by Tom Doorley. O’Brien Press e19.95 Stg£13.99 Self-effacing it ain’t. Assertive it is. If an autobiography should provide the reader with a deep insight into the character of the author this is a very good book indeed. I first got to know Tom in the late 80s when he and I were two of a mere nap hand of journalists in Ireland pontificating on wine. Since when he’s made the transition from ‘young fogy’ to ‘medium-old funky’ without doing any of those daft things one’s sup...
